Here’s another source for older Sony Vaio PCG series laptops and notebooks. I have a sony VGN-FS790 aka PCG-7D1L it doen’t work anymore due to a burnt/blown capacitos(rectangular tan-ish color) The blown capaciton is located below the heatsink I’ve maganed to de-solder it and am looking for a ceramic capacitor to replace it. In the area when it is located there are 2 other capacitors to the left of it, if laptop is on table with battery location downward and cd/dvd burner to the left Numbers below this capacitor are PQ49 thou they do not goto this cap they’re just written right below it.To the left of this capacitor is two more capacitors like it and a black chip with this writing to left of that AF5AL FDS 6680A. What I need and would like some info on is the value of the capacitor so that I can purchase a replacement to solder it on and fix this sony laptop. Has anyone dealt with this type of issue?

However, when I plug the charger into the computer to charge it, the “charging” light doesnt come on, or blink like it should, but the light on the charger box is green, meaning it is working fine.PLEASE HELP!

Any info would help. I have a sony vaio laptop (model no: VGN-CR11GH). I purchased this laptop last year from India. Three days ago it stopped working completely and It is not getting started. There are no LED displays. I tried holding the power button for 30 seconds and then releasing it, also removing the battery and then connecting it, but they was of no use.
I also checked the ac adapter and it is working fine (the adapter has a led display which is glowing when i connect it to the power supply). Can anyone tell me what could be the problem.Thanks. to the guy with the sony laptop with vista the reason why xp dosent regognise the hard drive is because the motherboard has no sata support in the bios as with all sony vaio’s have had this problem many times you need to find the correct raid driver for that motherboard install it on to a floppy and press f6 when prompted to install external raid drivers if the raid drivers are the correct ones xp will then see the hard drive and install xp.
However you might not be able to find xp drivers for the motherboard devices ie. Sound graphics etc. Thanx for the Sony repair manual links – sure appriciate it. The Sony’s are suipposed to be somewhat tricky to change even a HD or memory from what i understand – these will help. Now if you run into a set of links for the exploded views with part numbers for ordering that would complete what i need to fix my VGN-SZ460n.I tried Sony, and though they’ll lopok up a part number via land line discription part by part – that risks a wrong part being sentThey wouldn’t send the exploded views for reference of part numbers.go figure? Lolthanx again forthe PDF’s above. I have a Toshiba centrino laptop, it had been serving me 2 for years but now it has a problem with its LCD screen. The screen often goes off and becomes very dark, there isn’t any lighting on the screen, but when I look close to the screen, I can see the GUI display as it is normally working.
Sometimes the screen goes off when playing film or music but the film or music sound is still playing, and I still can see the statement of the film still moving on in a very dim image. I am sure that my laptop is normally working except the backlight. When this problem happens, I close the lid and my laptop goes to standby mode, after that I open the lid and the screen it lit again, Sometimes I have to close and open several times to get it lit back.
One thing very special, If I open the lid lower or equal 90 degree, It just flash in milisecond and then turns dark. If I open it more than 90degree, It works fine. But it’s not convenient to work with a laptop like tis. I don’t know what wrong with it. Anyone has good ideas?
Please help me!. above is my problem before i posted to another forum but no solution found.I am sure that when dismantling the laptop, you have accidentally removed the tape sticked on the IB(inverter board).
The IB is usually laid inside a transparent cubic plastic tube located under screen. Please take the IB out of the tube and wrap it with transparent sellotape around it as spiral shape from head to end till IB is fully wrapped. Then re-insert inside the plastic tube and connect the power connectors at 2 heads.
I am sure it will work fine forever, that’s amazing. Don’t think that the tape doesn’t effect to the problem, Yes, it really does. Remember not to remove any sellotape sticked on mainboard. Thank you for those links! I found this page because I want to repair my VGN-S150. It sometimes fails to pass the BIOS POST.
When it fails, I’ll still get the power light, the battery light (when appropriate), and the Wireless light (when turned on), but there’s no LCD activity, and no Vaio sound (that’s the setting I turned to tell me BIOS POST was successful).I suspect it’s either the ATI chip or one of the other unprotected chips (it’s either the Northbridge or Southbridge, but it sits to the left of the CPU and to the lower right of the ATI chip.I think putting pressure on one or two chips could restore functionality to the laptop.Any thoughts?. Dear cj2600,I was also fearing that a component on the mother board is fried. However, when I followed your clues and checked both the motherboard and cooling fan area, I found out something interesting. Actually the smoke was coming from the dust gathered in the cooling fan area and I am still not sure about the sparks.Anyway, after cleaning the 1 inch thik layer of dust from the vent area everything is back to normal.
Even the display is ok.Thank you very much for uploading the Service manual. It saved both money and time. To cj2600:Thank you for your reply about my Vaio VGN-S150! I discovered one of my RAM chips was bad, indeed. The laptop didn’t even recognize it – I expected 512MB but got only 256MB. I ran MemTest86+ on the other good chip. I would look over every few minutes to check up on the program’s progress.
On one occasion, I noticed the timer had not progressed and the progress bar looked erratic but working. I lifted the laptop with my right hand grasping the right side of the keyboard. The timer had jumped to its correct time and the progress bar displayed as expected. I put the laptop down and the timer froze. The progress bar went wonky again.
MemTest86+ did report a good working RAM chip for at least one pass.I’m starting to believe the ATI chip’s ball grid array is starting to come apart. Lifting the laptop gave its mainboard enough pressure in the right places to reconnect the BGA (ATI) chip. I got this laptop for free because it was no longer reliably working, so I’m very willing to try risky procedures and safer ones that may only provide temporary relief.I’m thinking of placing a shim to put more pressure on the ATI chip to reconnect that ball grid array. I was thinking of putting rubber padding underneath the mainboard where the ATI chip is located. I was also thinking about taking the fan and heatsink off and putting one or even two thin copper or aluminum squares with thermal grease between the ATI chip and the heatsink. I’m not skilled enough to perform a solder reflow of the ball grid array. If I totally wreck the motherboard, I can move on and figure out whether the Vaio’s LCD (on the VGN-S150) would fit a Macbook (or maybe even the 13.3-inch Macbook Pro).I’d love to hear thoughts about the shim idea. Thanks again for the reply!. I have the 17 inch VGN-AR770.
I am a little pissed off considering this laptop just past it’s 1 year mark and the warranty is expired. I have barely used it and left it in pristine condition.Spontaneously the monitor will “freeze” the current image and then slowly turn white with some faint gray blotches.
If I move the top of the laptop toward me, sometimes the image comes back to normal. If I move it backward, then the image freezes and goes white again.External monitor works fine. I opened the top and bottom of the laptop, and checked the connection on both sides, it seems fine. Is it possible that the cable is getting squished in the hinge.judging from the fact that moving the top back and forth causes the problem to re-appear or go away? Lately I have been using the laptop without the LCD bezel, and I removed the left speaker to give the cable more breathing room.
I think this is ridiculous! The problem does happen sponataneously so I don’t know if I’ve truly narrowed down the problem yet. Have you ever seen something like this? Thanks!

HiThis is Khondker from Bangladesh. My father bought me a Sony( Vaio -VGN SR43G) from Malaysia. It was working fine for 4 months.
But now a problem has appeared. The problem is – When I switch on or power my laptop. It starts. The power indicator light remains green. But my Lcd screen appears black. It doesn’t has brightness or light.
I reinstalled my system, but no progress. At the time of booting, my screen shows light for 1 second, after that it remains black. If I plug other monitor it shows the screen there properly.
But my laptop screen remains black. What should I do? Please answer me with your help.Khondker(Bangladesh). Hi guys, I have a sony vaio vgn-a197vp which is now 6 or 7 years old. Although the laptop is old, whenever I go to my mothers house I still use it, doing so now (ubuntu and xp).The laptop currently has 1.250 GB of mem and I can still browse but every time that I need to push it a bit ? it hangs a allot. One of the things I love (i really like the quality) about this laptop is the 17′ 1920×1200 screen and keyboard, specially the screen in my opinion unbeaten by new screens being produced now.So my question if someone can help me is, is it hard to upgrade all the hardware inside and keep at least the screen?ThanksOrlando. Orlando,So my question if someone can help me is, is it hard to upgrade all the hardware inside and keep at least the screen?Laptops are not very upgradeable. There are not many parts you can upgrade, except memory, hard drive and in some cases CPU.It looks like your Sony Vaio vgn-a197vp can take up to 2GB RAM (two 1GB modules), so you can upgrade memory. Also, this laptop is old and most likely running a 4200RPM IDE hard drive.
You can speed up the laptop by upgrading to a 5400RPM or even better 7200RPM hard drive. This requires OS reinstall or cloning. To: peejayI just took apart my Vaio, there is a line running from where the battery plugs in to where my biometric scanner and wireless toggle is located, perhaps it is broken? Also, LAPTOP REPAIR, i have a Sony Vaio VGN-G118TN, it is an asian model (don’t ask hehe) would you happen to know where to get repair manual’s for it?286peejay Says:July 5th, 2011 at 2:11 amPlease does anyone know why the light for my wireless switch wont turn on and why the wireless doesn’t work anymore?Thanx!!I have a Sony VGN-NS11Z. Hi,I have seen red ants crawling into and out of my Sony Vaio laptop Model PCG-71311W. I checked with a service center close to my place but they seem to be more focused on how much they can fleece me.
They suggested the computer would need repair in addition to cleaning, as soon as I mentioned red ants. Plus I cannot visit that city for another three weeks. Any suggestion as to what I can do to prevent further damage till I can get to a service center? I live in a not so well-connected town in India.Thanks. I have a Sony Vaio pcg-9111L, also known as a vpcec390x.
I was dumb and took it on a camping trip over a very rough road. It did not like that.
Now it GPFs regularly. A memory diagnostic did not turn up anything with the RAM.
I want to disassemble it to see if there is something that jarred loose, etc. I am looking for a guide to disassemble the body of the sucker. It is not at all obvious. Even a guide to replacing the keyboard would be a help, as that would get me into the case. There are no obvious tabs, screws, etc., that suggest a way in.
Any help appreciated. @ Marque Blundell,my sony VAIO VGN-C15GP there are vertical “lines” on the screen Bright and dark picture is there any idears? Can you test your laptop with an external monitor? If external video works fine and the problem appears only on the laptop screen, it could be one of the following:1. Bad connection between the video cable and LCD screen or motherboard. Reseating connections might help.2. LCD screen failure.3.
Bad video cable.Take a look at the following posts for more info:http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2006/08/17/bad-video-on-lcd-screen/http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2006/02/22/troubleshoot-fix-laptop-video-problems/. Hi.I have sony vaio VPCEB2Z0E high end model.
It just happened to me that today morning i folder my laptop in normal way without shut down just like sleep mode. I usually do this from past 1 year or so. Surprise that, when i came and try to start my laptop, i see that alomost half of my screen (Bottom) went white.i see that mouse pointer is not going below that half screen.but when i click randomly.its opened whatever stored there. Now i have no idea what went wrong as i did not do anything with laptop.
I even completely restored the laptop with factory settings.but still that half white screen is coming.(Usually the screen is not totally white.some icons or any items behind are look like faded.but cant see though). Can some one pls help me as what could be the problem and laptop dont have warranty anymore. @ Gabriel,Black screen few seconds when plugged/unplugged i have sony viao laptop model VPCEB15FX/BI.I REBOOT the system and i’m still with the same problem.Your description is not very clear. Looking for some answer! hello guys i have broken my cmos battery socket while cleaning my sony viao pcg-61511m model laptopmotherboard with petro. Many problems with my Sony vaioVGN- S5M / SI know it dates. It heats, burns, and the fan makes a lot of noise for about a year. The spring and summer I have to put a real fan nearby, not one of these little ventilos office made in China, not a true ultra powerful air blower brewer.
There, no more problem. But it is spring and it is not yet warm enough for the presence of this ceiling fan is bearable because there is me turns me off. (!!)So I’ll change the model, but I certainly do not redeem sony.More I opted for Norton360 first edition pftttttttt it starts at any time in the background and pump the ram while aggravating overheating.Norton is crap.Sony crap.Microsoft Windows: scammers with their requests for updates untimely day.Bing hotmail shit it is even difficult to remove. Here is my humble testimony.
